How Much Money Will You Need to Retire?

This article has been updated and moved to an associate's site: How much of a nest egg will you need to retire gracefully?

  1. Hi, Kitty,
I take issue with the 90%-of-income estimate needed to retire. If you are making a $1M/year, then 25% should be more than adequate. If you are trying to live on $30k, then $125% might be more reasonable. As an alternative, how about: 90% of what you spend now on your expenses, plus health expenses and inflation. For me that might be 60%-65% of my current income.
